  • London Marathon 2012

Over 37,500 people ran the 32nd London Marathon in unexpectedly fine weather. Many of Britain’s elite runners were competing against the clock in their bids to impress the selectors ahead of the Olympics this summer. Several records were broken and Londoner David Weir won the Elite Wheelchair race for the sixth time, matching Dame Tanni-Grey Thompson’s record. Aside from this amazing achievement David too will be hoping he has secured a place in Paralympics.

Sadly the race was overshadowed by the story of Claire Squires collapsing and dying within the last mile of the race. Such has been the empathy felt for this wonderful person that donations have exceeded £1m for her chosen charity, the Samaritans. Overall it is hoped that runners raised over £50m for the many worthy charities.

For Sports Therapy UK, this is our 18th year supporting the runners for more than 10 different charities and we exceeded our own ‘Team Best’ with over 120 students and practitioners massaging more than 900 runners. This is the biggest event on our calendar and is one of many that provides many opportunities for students to gain invaluable experience at major events. Each year our teams work for a few intense hours easing the limbs of the runners. It is exhilarating, rewarding, and tiring – as all of our team members will testify.

We would like to add our thanks to the many expressions of gratitude from both runners and charities alike. Your professionalism and sports massage skills were greatly appreciated by all.

It was an exhausting but fantastic day and we are already receiving very positive feedback from both practitioners and the charities we supported.

Here is what a couple of them had to say:

“I hope that you had a good weekend and everything went well for all of your charities yesterday.

I just wanted to say a huge ‘thank you’ for your support.  Melissa and her colleagues did a brilliant job yesterday and I really appreciated all their help.  They were delightful to work with and I hope that they enjoyed being part of our London Marathon reception.  We had such wonderful feedback from the runners, saying how much of a difference the massage made to them.  It is one of the most important parts of our duty of care for our team on Marathon Day.

We look forward to working with you all again next year!”

“Just a very quick email to say thank you for all the hard work of the team of masseuses that helped yesterday.

The runners felt so much better once they’d had their massage and were all very grateful for your teams effort! Your team worked so hard and even stayed a little later to make sure that our last two runners were looked after.

    Thank you.”
